Adidas under fire for unveiling new trainer with orange 'shackles' like those worn by black slaves
Forget the Air Yeezy II. The sneaker name on everybody's lips this morning is Adidas' Jeremy Scott x adidas Roundhouse Mid "Handcuffs", or the "shackle" sneaker.
Posted by Adidas Originals on its Facebook page, the Jeremy Scott x adidas Roundhouse Mid "Handcuffs" are an updated version of Adidas' classic Roundhouse, a high-top lace-up with a Velcro strap across the middle. But for his latest collaboration with the athletic label, designed Jeremy Scott has added a plastic handcuff (or shackle, if you will) to each ankle, attached by chains.
Adidas Originals is promoting the $350 kicks, which won't hit stores until August 12th, with clever "locked up" puns:
Tighten up your style with the JS Roundhouse Mids, dropping in August.

The shoes have gotten only moderate press since they emerged this winter. But since Adidas Originals posted a preview pic on Facebook last week, fans in the blogosphere have voiced their strong reactions with over 2,000 comments.
Most take issue with the ankle shackle, interpreting it as a historical symbol of African slavery. "Racist a bit, no?" asked one commenter. "Please African Americans don't line up for these, Where does the Respect Begin and End for our people. Boycott Please!" another one stated. One commenter wrote, "Please tell me this is FAKE. I am not hearing these Adidas Amistad Originals," ostensibly referencing the famous African slave ship that was the site of a slave revolt in 1839.
Some fans, of course, are clearly less perturbed. One Facebook commenter reflected a general feeling of apathy with the statement,"not every thing with a chain is related to slavery people....."
But despite the uproar, the shoes are still online as Adidas Originals promotes their August drop date. In response to the controversy, Adidas told The Huffington Post:
The design of the JS Roundhouse Mid is nothing more than the designer Jeremy Scott’s outrageous and unique take on fashion and has nothing to do with slavery. Jeremy Scott is renowned as a designer whose style is quirky and lighthearted and his previous shoe designs for adidas Originals have, for example, included panda heads and Mickey Mouse. Any suggestion that this is linked to slavery is untruthful.

Rodney King Dead at 47 #RIP
Rodney King, the man who became the catalyst for the 1992 Los Angeles riots, was found dead Sunday (June 17) in his California home at the age of 47.
King was brutally beaten during a 1991 traffic stop in Los Angeles, during which he was struck more than 50 times by four white officers, who were later accused of using racial slurs during the attack. Footage of the incident eventually made its way to TV, sparking public outcry. The controversial outcome of the trial (all four were acquitted) led to a series of deadly riots and looting in the city that claimed 50 lives and cost approximately $1 billion in damages.
According to CNN, King was found on Sunday morning, after his fiancée Cynthia Kelly placed a 911 call to the Rialto, California, police at approximately 5:25 a.m. When officers arrived at the scene, King's body was at the bottom of a pool; he was confirmed dead at a nearby hospital.
Captain Randy DeAnda told reporters that police would investigate the crime as a drowning, and added that there were no obvious signs of foul play at the scene or suspicious injuries to the victim's body. "His fiancée heard him in the rear yard," DeAnda said describing the events before Kelly placed the 911 call. (Kelly met King while serving as a juror in his 1994 lawsuit against the city of Los Angeles.)
Even after the L.A. riots had ended, King's beating continued to send shockwaves across the nation, thanks to the clear picture of the racially motivated police brutality that was captured in the taped footage. In 1993, the accused officers stood trial, this time in federal court, and two were sentenced to 30 months in prison, while two others were acquitted. King, who brought his own lawsuit against the city, received $3.8 million in damages.
Strangely enough, in 2011 was King was ticketed for a minor traffic violation on the 20th anniversary of the beating. Besides that, the Californian also attempted to pursue a career in music, using some of his settlement money to launch it. Four years ago, King appeared on VH1's "Celebrity Rehab," where he was open about his battle with alcohol.
The impact of King's beating on the state of race in America can be heard across classic hip-hop albums like Ice Cube's The Predator and Dr. Dre's The Chronic, which captured the racial tension in Los Angeles at the time. On his single, "Who Got the Camera?" Cube made direct reference to the beating, by telling a realistic story of being assaulted by the police after being pulled over.

Drake and Chris Brown fight confirmed by TMZ, possibly over Rihanna
Drake flashed his middle finger, engaged in serious trash talk, and drafted several other rappers to join his posse ... minutes before the all out brawl with Chris Brown, according to multiple witnesses in the club.
We're told the tension started building when Drake gave the middle finger to one of Chris' bodyguards and shouted ... "I'm about to go whoop that ass!" Chris' entourage then returned fire with a few hand gestures of their own.
Witnesses -- who were very close to the action -- tell us that Drake felt disrespected ... even though he started the exchange ... and went to get backup from his boys Meek Mill, Juelz Santana, and Trav B.
At this point, we're told Drake got loud and shouted at Chris ... "You be on that ho s**t on Twitter n***a" -- a clear reference to a recent Twitter war between Chris, Drake, and Meek ... all over who's banging Rihanna.
Moments later we're told Chris' security guards got irate, pushing and shoving began between Meek, Juelz and Chris' posse -- and you know the rest.
Interestingly, everyone agrees Drake never got physically involved in the brawl -- even though his mouth ... and finger ... sparked it all.

KKK wants to "adopt" highway in Georgia
A group affiliated with the Ku Klux Klan wants to "adopt" a mile-long stretch of highway in Georgia.
According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Georgia Department of Transportation is currently reviewing the May 21 request—filed by International Keystone Knights of the KKK in Union County—to clean up part of Route 515 in the Appalachian Mountains in Blairsville.
"Any civic-minded organization, business, individual, family, city, county, state, or federal agency is welcome to volunteer in the Georgia Adopt-A-Highway program," according to the department's website.
The state attorney general's office is expected to decide Monday.

"We just want to clean up the doggone road," Harley Hanson, who filed the application, told the paper. "We're not going to be out there in robes."
But Rep. Tyrone Brooks, head of the Georgia Association of Black Elected Officials, called on state officials to reject the application.
"This is about membership building and rebranding their name in a public way," Brooks said. "What's next, are we going to let neo-Nazis or the Taliban or al-Qaida adopt highways?"

"We are good, decent Christian Americans," Hanson, the group's "exalted cyclops," added. "What we're trying to do is to work with the local community."
It's not the first time the KKK has participated in an "Adopt-a-Highway" program.
In 2000, the KKK successfully adopted part of Interstate 55 south of St. Louis after a federal judge ruled that the Missouri Department of Transportation could not keep the group out of the cleanup program.
The Georgia KKK group said it would file a lawsuit if the state rejects its application.

Most medical guidelines suggest that sperm count can be seriously set back by all manner of enjoyable activities: drinking, smoking, taking recreational drugs and even eating unhealthy food. A new study, however, suggests there's only one thing you really need avoid: tight pants.
The work, which is published in the journal Human Reproduction, compared 900 men with low sperm counts to 1,300 with high sperm counts. Turns out, use of drugs, tobacco, and alcohol had little effect when comparing the populations, nor did being overweight.
The only thing that made a big difference was how snug pants and underwear were. Allan Pacey, one of the researchers, explains to The Independent:
"There is no need for men to become monks just because they want to be a dad. But if they are a fan of tight Y-fronts, then switching underpants to something a bit looser for a few months might be a good idea."
To make good-quality sperm, the testicles need to be a degree or two cooler than body temperature, which is why they naturally hang low and loose. But a tight pair of pants—or even just a snug piece of underwear—keeps them close to the body, negating millions of years of evolution in the process.

Bengal's Nate Webster Sentenced To 12 Years For Sex With A Minor
We recently posted about the charges brought up against Nate Webster and his inappropriate behavior with the 15 year old daughter of a Cincinnati Bengals assistant coach while he was well in his 30's. Some of these encounters allegedly at gun point. Webster also allegedly threatened to kill the girl and her family if she told anyone. Webster admitted to the sexual encounter but says it didn't happen until after she turned 16, which is the age of consent in Ohio. He was found guilty of four counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor in April.
Webster could have done 20 years in prison and turned down a plea deal of 4 years. He has now been sentenced to 12 years. Looks like he should have taken the deal. I mean, who turns down FOUR YEARS when you're looking at a possible 20? Was he that confident that he was going to get away with it?
Lauryn Hill Charged With Failing To Pay Taxes On Over $1.6 Million In Earnings #IRSGANGSTA
Lauryn Hill has found herself in tax trouble. The New Jersey native has been charged with failing to pay taxes on $1.6 million in earning, U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman, announced Thursday (June 7).
According to Fishman, the 37-year-old mother of six, failed to file taxes in 2005, 2006, and 2007. Hill faces a $100,000 fine for each of the three charges.
While much of her income comes from royalties, she also owns four corporations: Creations Music, Inc., L.H. Productions 2001 Inc., Boogie Tours, Inc., and Studio 22 Inc.
The singer took the stage at Hot 97's annual Summer Jam last weekend, where she performed alongside Nas–who has had his fair share of tax issues. Following the show, the multi-Grammy winner also came to the defense of Nicki Minaj who was billed to headline the show but pulled out after she was dissed by radio personality, Peter Rosenberg.

'Hughleys' Child Star Charged With Murder And Gang Activity #GAWN
The actor who played little Michael Hughley on the '90s sitcom The Hughleys has been charged with murder and gang activity.
Mediatakeout.com broke the story and RadarOnline.com has independently confirmed the tragic case.
Child star Dee Jay Daniels - real name Dorjan Lyndell Daniels - is currently behind bars in San Joaquin County Jail awaiting trial on the horrific charges.
They stem from an incident in August 2011 when Daniels, along with two other men, was accused of stabbing to death 26-year-old John Joseph outside Chitivah's nightclub in Stockton, Ca.
The 23-year-old former star is believed to be a member of the notorious Bloods gang and his inmate details reveal he is being held without bail.
The charges listed are two counts of street terrorism, one of willful, deliberate, premeditated murder and attempted murder: premeditated.
If convicted he faces life behind bars.
His next hearing is June 7 when jury trial is expected to be confirmed.
As well as playing the quick witted kid in The Hughleys he also appeared in several shows including In the House, Coach, The Wayans Bros, Grace Under Fire and Cold Case.

Kareem “Biggs” Burke Sentenced to Five Years in Prison #GAWN
Roc-A-Fella Records co-founder and Jay-Z's former business partner Kareem "Biggs" Burke was sentenced to five years in prison on Monday, reports New York Daily News.
Burke was one of 50 people caught up in "Operation Green Venom," a federal drug sting that targeted a drug trafficking ring in New York City. The usually low-key member of the threefold Roc-A-Fella ownership structure (along with Jay and Damon Dash) pleaded guilty to marijuana distribution charges in March. He was finally sentenced yesterday for conspiring to distribute more than 100 kilos of marijuana.
Prosecutors claimed that marijuana was being grown in Florida and California and later smuggled into New York. Biggs was caught at a grow house on wiretap discussing illegal activities.
During his sentencing Biggs promised Manhattan Federal Court Judge Loretta Swain that she would never see him in court again. She replied, "Nothing personal, but I'm going to keep you to that promise."

YOUNG DRO 'Maserati' Rapper Has His Maserati Repo'd
Young Dro once rapped that he's "the kinda person that gonna drive a Maserati" -- but that just ain't true anymore ... because he just had his repossessed ... TMZ has learned.
According to a lawsuit obtained by TMZ, Dro leased a $134,000, 2007 Maserati Quattroporte Sport GT in January 2008. The docs say Dro agreed to fork over a $7,500 down payment and then pay monthly payments of $1,606.62.
But according to the lawsuit, Dro defaulted on the lease and now owes the leasing company $61,220.37. The company has repo'd the Maserati.
The leasing company wants the money it is owed, plus attorneys' fees.
Calls to Young Dro have not been returned.
Jimmy Henchman Found Guilty Of All Charges #GAWN
The trial of music industry mogul James “Jimmy Henchman” Rosemond came to a close today in a Brooklyn federal court.
A jury found Rosemond guilty of all 13 charges levied against him, for allegedly heading up the “Rosemond Organization.”
Federal prosecutors claim the organization shipped hundreds of kilograms on a weekly basis from the West Coast, using various overnight courier services.
The drugs were then shipped to New York, while the proceeds were sent back to the West Coast.
Rosemond was emotionless when the jurors reached their verdict, while his family friends and supporters showed obvious signs of disappointment.
“I am very disappointed by the verdict,” Rosemond’s lawyer Gerald Shargel told AllHipHop.com exclusively. “There were a lot of reasons to doubt the government’s case.”
James Rosemond was the CEO of Czar Entertainment, which at its height, managed artists like Akon, Brandy, Groove Theory, Gucci Mane, Game, Michael K. Williams, Mike Tyson, Sheek Louch, and numerous others.
Rosemond is facing life in prison. He will be sentenced at a later date.

UCLA defends decision to award Sean 'Diddy' Combs' son Justin Combs full athletic scholarship
Justin Combs has yet to play in a UCLA football game, but he's already on the receiving end of some controversy.
The university responded Wednesday to criticism of its decision to grant a $54,000 full athletic scholarship to the son of rap mogul Sean (Diddy) Combs.
He’ll don a blue and gold jersey for the Pac-12 Bruins this fall.
UCLA said the merit-based athletic scholarship was separate from the school's need-based financial aid program and didn't include a dime of taxpayer funds.
"There's a misconception out there that somehow athletic scholarships would take away money from low-income students who need need-based aid," school spokesman Ricardo Vazquez said. "That's not the case. Athletic scholarships are awarded strictly on the basis of athletic and academic ability."
He said scholarships for outstanding student athletes are funded by UCLA Athletics ticket sales, corporate partnerships, media contracts and private donations.
Schools routinely use athletic scholarships as a recruiting tool, and the 5-foot-9, 175-pound defensive back from Iona Prep in New Rochelle had competing offers from other Division I schools including Illinois, Iowa and Virginia, ESPN reported.
Diddy declined to comment on the scholarship squabble.
"As a parent, today is one of the proudest moments of my life," he said late last year after his son committed to UCLA. "This is everything a father could want for his son, for him to excel at what he loves to do and is truly passionate about. "
One expert suggested Diddy make a donation to UCLA.
"I'm not opposed to merit scholarships if they're truly based on merit,” financial aid expert Mark Kantrowitz, publisher of FinAid.org, said.
“But low-income students increasingly are being priced out of higher education," he said. "Money coming from athletic ticket sales is fungible money the school could use to supplement need-based financial aid."

GUCCI MANE Loses $270K Diamond War
Rapper Gucci Mane just lost a $270,000 battle in court -- after a New York jewelry company sued the rapper for stealing a buttload of diamonds ... and won.
Rafaello & Co. retained attorney Vivian Uchitel (no relation) to file the lawsuit earlier this year in Henry County, claiming it loaned the rapper a $130,000 diamond pinky ring ... in addition to a diamond necklace and bracelet worth $110,000.
According to the lawsuit, Gucci had 15 days to pay for the goods or return them -- and he did neither ... coughing up only $40,000.
Rafaello sued for a total of $274,523.34 -- the $200,000 jewelry balance plus interest and attorneys' fees.
Gucci never showed up in court, so a default judgment was entered against the rapper in April. A lien was then placed on the rapper's property.
Gucci still hasn't responded to the action.

But his courtroom streak came to an end Wednesday when a Las Vegas judge sentenced him to 90 days in jail after he pleaded guilty to a reduced battery domestic violence charge and no contest to two harassment charges.
The case stemmed from a hair-pulling, punching and arm-twisting argument with his ex-girlfriend Josie Harris while two of their children watched in September 2010.
"Punishment is appropriate," Justice of the Peace Melissa Saragosa said after a prosecutor complained that Mayweather has been in trouble before and hasn't faced serious consequences.

"No matter who you are, you have consequences to your actions when they escalate to this level of violence," she said.
Good behavior could knock several weeks off Mayweather's sentence. but he will likely serve most of the sentence set to begin Jan. 6, said Officer Bill Cassell, a Las Vegas police spokesman.
Mayweather and his manager, Leonard Ellerbe, declined comment outside the courtroom.
The jail time raises doubts about a possible showdown between Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, a champion fighter from the Philippines against whom Mayweather's welterweight success is usually measured.
A long-awaited fight between the two men regarded as among the best of their generation has been delayed by stalling techniques and verbal sparring.
The two men have a defamation lawsuit pending in Las Vegas federal court stemming from statements by Mayweather that he suspects Pacquiao was taking performance-enhancing drugs.
Mayweather returned in September from a 16-month layoff to continue his undefeated record with a controversial knockout of Victor Ortiz in Las Vegas.
Mayweather's promoters have a May 5 date reserved against an as-yet unnamed opponent at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. But if Mayweather is jailed until the end of March, it could cut into the usual eight-plus weeks he takes to train.
Keith Kizer, executive director of the Nevada Athletic Commission, said licenses for all fighters expire on Saturday, and most, including Mayweather, have yet to reapply for next year.
He said Mayweather would be asked on his license application if he was convicted of any misdemeanors or felonies.
Kizer said commissioners would then decide whether to approve or deny his license or hold a hearing to talk about it. The commission has been in contact with prosecutors and Mayweather's lawyers as cases against him have progressed, he said.
Lee Samuels, a spokesman for Pacquiao's promoter Top Rank and Bob Arum, declined comment on Mayweather's sentencing and its possible effect on a match.
Mayweather, 34, stood still in a striped olive vest and showed no reaction as the judge sentenced him to six months in the Clark County jail then suspended half the term.
She gave him credit for three days previously served in jail and ordered him to complete 100 hours of community service, pay a $2,500 fine and complete a yearlong domestic violence counseling program.
The plea deal avoided trial on felony and misdemeanor that could have gotten Mayweather 34 years in state prison if he was convicted on all counts.
Mayweather also is expected to plead no contest next week to a separate misdemeanor harassment charge involving a 21-year-old homeowner association security guard who was poked in the face during an argument about parking tickets placed on cars outside Mayweather's house.
Mayweather's lawyer, Karen Winckler, said she may appeal what she called the unusual sentence handed down Wednesday.

Judge Orders George Zimmerman Back To Jail
A Florida judge revoked George Zimmerman's bail Friday (June 1), after prosecutors filed a motion to have him thrown back in jail. According to reports, Zimmerman's wife lied at about being aware of the financial support he received from a website created before he turned himself in to face second-degree murder charges, in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin.
In a new recording released today, Zimmerman can be heard asking his wife about a second passport hidden in a safe deposit box, leading prosecutors to believe that the 28-year-old was speaking in code during the conversation. Prosecutors have branded the accused killer as being "deceiving," both in the correspondence with his wife, and during his bond hearing where he claimed to have been in need of financial assistance, despite having $135,000 in his bank account.
Judge Kenneth Lester previously contemplated sending Zimmerman back to jail after learning of the massive amounts of donations he received from the website, but concluded that he did not have the authority to do so. As such Zimmerman was released from prison and has been in hiding for the last month.
While prosecutors want the 28-year-old back behind bars, they do share the same views as Zimmerman's attorney, Mike O'Mara, in regard to the release of private evidence that continues to be made public.
