Advertising Mogul Steve Stoute Calls Out Grammys Over Hip-Hop Snubs
Hip-Hop mogul/advertising executive Steve Stoute took out a full page ad in today's (February 20th) New York Times, calling out Neil Portnow, NARAS and the Grammy Awards over their treatment of rap music.
According to Stoute, the 2011 Grammy Awards were proof that the organization has lost touch with popular culture.
"Does theGrammys intentionally use artists for their celebrity, popularity and cultural appeal when they already know the winners and then program a show against this expectation? Meanwhile the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences hides behind the "peer" voting system to escape culpability for not even rethinking its approach," Stoute snapped.
Fans of Eminem, JustinBieber - three of the year's best-selling artists - were outraged when the artists were snubbed in their top categories by lesser known artists, who weren't as popular.
The past year's Grammy's enjoyed the highest ratings for the evening, prompting Stoute to accuse the Grammy's of using Hip-Hop and rap friendly artists like Justin Bieber, for their popularity.
"I imagine that next year there will be another televised super-close-up of an astonished front-runner as they come to the realization before a national audience... that he or she was used."
Steve Stoute is the founder of Translation, a company that has worked with Reebok, Target, State Farm, Lady Gaga, Mary J. Blige, Jay-Z, McDonalds, Beyonce, Nas

Rapper Wins $300k Settlement After Cop Plants Gun
Oakland rapper Zoe Tha Roasta has reached a $300,000 settlement with the city of Oakland, California, after a police office planted a gun on him, resulting in jail time.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, former Oakland police officer Ramon Alcantar planted a gun on Zoe as he was leaving a wake for his aunt in June of 2006.
The rapper claimed he was picked up by Alcantar, who put him in the back of his squad car and said "I found your gun."
Zoe, born Lorenzo Hall, began yelling and publicly protesting but was still charged with numerous weapons offenses.
He eventually spent 18 months in jail, before the charges were dropped in 2008.
"This was an important case for holding the police officers accountable for their misconduct," Zoe's attorney John Burris told The Chronicle. "Because Mr. Hall has a criminal record, the officers claimed a weapon found in a car was his when the evidence was clear that the gun belonged to someone else."
Zoe will receive $175,000 from the City of Oakland. The rest of the settlement will go to attorney fees.

Rapper J-Kwon Says He's Been In Jail For Child Support And The Baby Turns out Not To be His
While reports surfaced last year that “Tipsy” rapper J-Kwon was missing, the St. Louis emcee is back with an explanation for his absence.
As previously reported, reps for the rapper released a statement claiming that the rapper had gone missing and they feared for his safety.
Now J-Kwon himself, real name Jerrell Jones, is speaking out and confirming that he wasn't necessarily missing, just in jail for back child support.
The rapper called in to St. Louis' ……show to speak with radio host Georgia and confirmed that he'd not only been making support payments but he was also paying for a child he found out wasn't his.
“I blame my absence from the game on this situation. Just as I was getting my first million dollar check a girl came to me and said she was pregnant…Kwon also says he's going to start a foundation to help fathers making support payments that end up getting schemed by the system.
I bought her a house cause she's from the hood too, I let her stay at the house. I guess while I'm on tour she's taking paper work from the courts and disposing of them…
The payment ended up being $2,500 a month…
This kid looked like someone else, the test results came back in 24 hours and I am not the father…
I don't feel any better or any worse about the situation, I'm just happy to have my life back.”
“I'm gonna start a foundation just for that, that's crazy that the law helps someone scheme you for this long because A.) You're young, B.) You're successful and C.) They don't want you with it no way.”

A Queens mom says Toys R Us store sold her a kid-friendly "Go, Diego, Go!" video that turned out to be an X-rated porno.

Connor said she bought two cartoon DVDs for her sons, Logan, 3, and Nigel, 11, on Friday at the Toys "R" Us in the Green Acres Mall in Valley Stream. They watched the first one without incident.
On Saturday morning, Connor told Nigel to play the "Diego" DVD for his little brother. Nigel, a sixth-grader at the Susan B. Anthony School in Hollis, said:
"I saw a Caucasian lady and man and they were naked, I was surprised. I was very disgusted. I want apologies all around, who used to work at a different Toys "R" Us store. "It's not about the money."
Connor showed The News her receipt for the $12.99 DVD and the plastic wrapping it was sealed in when she bought it.
As of last night, she had not contacted the Toys "R" Us store, saying she was waiting to hire a lawyer, he said she called Nickelodeon, but got an unsatisfactory response.
The Game Ordered to Pay Up In $91,000 Jewelry Case
The Game is officially on the hook ... again ... this time for $90,999 -- after the rapper allegedly failed to pay for some ridiculously expensive custom jewelry he commissioned over three years ago.
An L.A. judge handed the order down last week ... demanding Game -- real name Jayceon Taylor -- settle his astronomical balance with jewelry company Lemmerman's Inc. stat.
According to the original complaint -- filed in L.A. last year -- Game ordered the following from 2007-2008:

- a 14K yellow gold 36" chain with yellow stones for $15,000
- a diamond stud for $4,000
- a 14K white gold 5-row bracelet for $17,500
- a 14K yellow gold 5-row bracelet for $17,500
- two other gold "pieces" for $30,000
That's $99,000 total -- and while Lemmerman's claims Game paid off a huge chunk a few years ago, he hasn't coughed up a penny since ... and now owes the balance plus interest, etc. Calls to Game's people haven't been returned.
