Intoxicated passengers allow 10-year-old to drive

KENNER, La. -- Police arrested two intoxicated women who allowed a 10-year-old child to drive a vehicle on the Interstate-10 Wednesday, according to Sgt. Brian McGreggor, a Kenner Police spokesman.

According to a Kenner police department news release, Brenda Byrd and Sheila Joiner, both of Kenner, were found intoxicated in a 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe after authorities received calls reporting a slow-moving vehicle swerving in and out of the travel lane on the Interstate-10 West in Kenner.

Officers found the Tahoe after it exited at Williams Boulevard and struck a curb while turning on 31st Street, police said. Both woman admitted to instructing the 10-year-old to drive the vehicle due to their intoxication level.

Kenner Police officers arrested Byrd and Joiner, charging them with contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile and allowing an unlicensed driver to operate a motor vehicle. Both remain in custody as of Wednesday with no set bond.

The 10-year-old and a 15-year-old passenger were placed in protective custody and later released to family members.
